Abstract

The construction industry is experiencing a fundamental transformation as novel materials redefine the conception, construction, and maintenance of structures. Conventional construction materials including concrete, steel, lumber, and bricks, although historically dependable, exhibit constraints regarding environmental effect, durability, and adaptability to contemporary performance requirements. In recent decades, there has been an increase in the creation and utilization of innovative materials that improve structural performance, decrease carbon emissions, and incorporate emerging digital technologies. This review consolidates progress in various categories of innovative materials, encompassing high-performance concretes such as ultra-high-performance and geopolymer concretes, smart and responsive materials including phase change composites and self-sensing systems, environmentally sustainable alternatives sourced from recycled and bio-based materials, advanced polymers and fiber-reinforced composites, and multifunctional nanomaterials. The swift acceptance of additive manufacturing has expedited the utilization of bespoke, printable construction materials, profoundly affecting efficiency and design versatility. The essay assesses various materials regarding mechanical, thermal, acoustic, and environmental performance, while rigorously analyzing difficulties including cost, scalability, standardization, and long-term durability. The assessment emphasizes practical applications in buildings, infrastructure, and resilient urban development from a global perspective, as well as new trends such as the integration of artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, and circular economy models. The findings emphasize that new materials are essential for tackling sustainability, performance, and resilience issues in contemporary building. The analysis finishes by pinpointing significant research deficiencies and providing a prospective outlook on the advancement of construction materials in influencing sustainable, adaptive, and intelligent built environments.
