This study examined the effects of cybercrime on socio-economic development in Ankpa Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. Specifically, the study explored the causes, effects and strategies for reducing cybercrime and its effects in the area. A descriptive survey research design was adopted, utilizing quantitative approaches. A sample size of 378 respondents was selected using multi-stage sampling techniques. Primary data were collected through structured questionnaires, while secondary data were sourced from scholarly publications, journals, articles and official reports. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequency and percentages, while inferential statistics including regression was applied to test the hypothesis. Revealing that, strategies for minimizing cybercrime particularly public awareness, job creation, and law enforcement collaboration do reduce its effects on socio-economic development in Ankpa LGA. Findings revealed that high unemployment, poverty, peer influence, weak enforcement of cyber laws, and poor digital literacy were the major causes of cybercrime in Ankpa LGA. In terms of effects, cybercrime was found to discourage local and foreign investment, erode trust in digital platforms, reduce business profitability, and cause revenue loss for both private enterprises and government. Approximately 72% of respondents agreed that cybercrime undermines social trust, weakens productivity, and hampers socio-economic progress. Regarding strategies for reduction, respondents emphasized the importance of stronger cyber laws, employment generation, digital literacy campaigns, and closer collaboration between security agencies, traditional leaders, and religious institutions. Although religious and traditional institutions were perceived as valuable in moral reorientation, statistical analysis showed that their impact alone was not significant in reducing cybercrime. The study concluded that cybercrime remains a pervasive and multidimensional threat to sustainable socio-economic development in Ankpa LGA. It fosters insecurity, discourages investment, weakens moral values, and erodes public trust in digital systems. Consequently, a multi-dimensional approach was recommended strengthening existing cyber laws, expanding employment opportunities, promoting digital literacy through awareness campaigns, and enhancing collaboration among law enforcement agencies, traditional authorities, and community leaders to restore moral orientation and curb cybercrime in the region.
