Abstract

Splenic infarction is a rare complication of infectious mononucleosis. We describe a case of splenic infarction attributed to infectious mononucleosis that we encountered.

When infected, the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) can cause a variety of clinical symptoms and levels of severity. Children and teenagers are the most affected population, typically clinical sign include lethargy, malaise, fever, sore throat, and widespread lymphadenopathy. Rarely, patients with infectious mononucleosis may also have gastritis, splenic infarction, or splenic rupture in addition to their gastrointestinal symptoms.
